The mask forms are an adaptation of the distictive face form patterns of the ancient Lapita ceramic culture of the Pacific. Based on geometric units, the form was repeated to form a decorative field around vessels. The fish shaped eye and fish shaped ear plug form associated with a number of Lapita face forms became a distinctive motif in this series of masks.
